Columbia University

What are some cool/unique things about Columbia? What opportunities or classes are offerred that set it apart from other schools? What about the Core Curriculum?
I will be applying to Columbia College. The majors I am applying to are information science, computer science, and political science, so information specific to those disiplines would be helpful as well.

I actually graduated from Barnard so I can tell you what makes Columbia College unique/cool.

I would definitely mention the Core Curriculum, Columbia College really prides itself on it. It definitely sets it apart from other colleges even the other ones under the Columbia University umbrella. It honestly THE thing that makes it different from all the other colleges. Most colleges requires student to take a whole bunch of classes but they aren't ever as specific as the Columbia Core.

It's in New York City. Most students don't take classes on Fridays in order to do internships. Columbia also has incredibly strong graduate schools, which for me was a huge plus, because it allows for academic expansion in terms of courses, research opportunities, professors, libraries, etc. It's a very politically active campus. Columbia has a true campus feel whereas other schools in NYC (like NYU) don't. The student body is very diverse over 50% of their students identify themselves as students of color.

The majority of folks who go to Columbia major in Political Science and become lawyers. It's known as a lawyer producing school.

Computer science is unique that a combination track is available to students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary course of study combining computer science and another field in the arts, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, or social sciences.

Information science is an interdisciplinary major. The information science major can choose a scientific focus on algorithms and systems for organizing, accessing, and processing information, or an interdisciplinary focus in order to develop an understanding of, and tools for, information modeling and use within an important sector of modern society such as economics or health.
